Severe Dust Storm Engulfs Northern Rajasthan, Plunging Multiple Districts into Darkness as Winds Reach 70 km/h
A severe dust storm struck northern Rajasthan between 2–3 p.m., bringing winds up to 70 km/h, near-zero visibility, and darkness across multiple districts including Bikaner, Churu, and Sri Ganganagar. The event caused market shutdowns, traffic disruption, and a rare red storm sighting in Lunkaransar, while also delivering a sharp temperature drop and light rainfall.
The intense weather system disrupted normal life across the affected areas. Visibility dropped sharply, forcing motorists to switch on headlights in broad daylight while navigating near-zero visibility conditions. Markets in several towns emptied quickly as residents rushed indoors in response to the rapidly deteriorating weather.
In Lunkaransar, residents reported witnessing a rare red dust storm phenomenon, marking the first such occurrence in the area. The unusual coloration of the sky added to the severity of the event, underscoring the intensity of dust-laden winds sweeping through the region.
Despite the extreme conditions, no casualties were reported. The storm, however, brought significant and immediate relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions, with temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius dropping by 15 to 20 degrees Celsius within a short span. Light rainfall was also recorded in some areas following the storm, further easing the harsh weather.
The India Meteorological Department had earlier forecasted the event, attributing it to thunderstorm activity originating from Punjab. Authorities have also cautioned that additional weather disturbances may occur in the coming period, urging continued vigilance across the region.
The dust storm, while disruptive, highlighted the volatile transition in weather patterns over northern Rajasthan, where extreme heat conditions rapidly gave way to intense atmospheric activity within hours.
