Speeding Mercedes Rams Marine Drive Checkpoint, Injures Two Police Officers; Accused Arrested After Manhunt
A speeding Mercedes allegedly hit two police officers at a Marine Drive checkpoint in Mumbai, critically injuring them before the driver fled. The accused was later arrested in Nalasopara after a police search. The case has sparked renewed concern over reckless driving and road safety enforcement in the city.
The accused, identified as Nihal Solanki, a resident of Panchavati in Nashik, was apprehended from Nalasopara following a search operation launched by Marine Drive Police.
According to officials, the incident occurred late on Sunday night when two police personnel were conducting vehicle inspections at a checkpoint on Marine Drive. The injured officers, identified as Constable Krishnakant Mishra and Rathod, are attached to Marine Drive Police Station. Police stated that both officers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Bombay Hospital.
Investigators said the officers had attempted to stop Solanki’s luxury vehicle at the checkpoint. However, instead of complying, he allegedly accelerated the car and struck both personnel before fleeing the location.
Following the incident, police teams rushed to the site and immediately shifted the injured officers to hospital for emergency treatment. A coordinated search operation was subsequently launched, leading to Solanki’s arrest in Nalasopara on Monday morning.
An official confirmed, “Solanki is now in custody as the investigation continues.”
Further investigation into the case remains underway, with authorities working to establish additional details surrounding the incident.
In a separate but similar case reported last month, three people were killed in the early hours after a speeding motorcycle struck a pedestrian at Marine Drive in South Mumbai. The incident took place at 5:40 am at the Parsi Gymkhana junction signal on NS Road, when a 66-year-old pedestrian was crossing the road.
Police said the motorcycle was being driven recklessly by a 19-year-old rider, who also had a woman in her mid-30s as a pillion passenger. The rider reportedly ignored the traffic signal and collided with the pedestrian. All three individuals—the rider, the passenger, and the pedestrian—were rushed to GT Hospital, where they were declared dead. Officials stated that the rider may have lost control of the speeding motorcycle, resulting in the fatal collision.
The two incidents have raised renewed concerns over reckless driving and road safety violations in the Marine Drive area, highlighting the severe consequences of high-speed negligence in densely monitored urban zones.
