-India Hosts Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai to Strengthen Global Diamond Trade Governance
India has inaugurated the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai under its Chairship, bringing global stakeholders together to discuss certification, compliance, and transparency in the natural diamond trade. The meeting focuses on strengthening trust, ethical sourcing, and international cooperation across 86 countries.
The high-level meeting, scheduled from May 11 to May 14, is focusing on the implementation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), alongside discussions on monitoring and compliance frameworks, artisanal and alluvial diamond production, trade statistics, and measures aimed at reinforcing trust across the natural diamond value chain.
Addressing delegates during the opening session, KP Chair 2026 Shri Suchindra Misra stated that the Kimberley Process has played a significant role in supporting peace, safeguarding livelihoods, and strengthening legitimate diamond trade across producing nations. He described the initiative as “one of the most progressive certification systems globally,” while underlining the need to enhance trust, deepen cooperation among participants, and ensure continued relevance in an evolving global environment.
The discussions at the meeting also serve as a platform for Participants and Observers to exchange perspectives on emerging challenges and collaborative strategies aimed at strengthening consumer confidence in ethically sourced natural diamonds. Senior officials from the Department of Commerce, Government of India, representatives of the World Diamond Council, members of the Civil Society Coalition, and other key stakeholders are actively participating in the deliberations.
India assumed the Chairship of the Kimberley Process on January 1, 2026. The Chairship theme for 2026 is centred on the 3Cs—credibility, compliance, and consumer confidence—with a strong emphasis on responsible sourcing and transparency within the natural diamond sector.
Established under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56 in 2000, the Kimberley Process currently comprises 60 Participants representing 86 countries, with the European Union participating as a single bloc. The ongoing meeting in Mumbai is expected to further strengthen global coordination and reinforce the integrity of the international diamond certification framework.
The proceedings highlight India’s active leadership role in shaping global standards for ethical diamond trade while reinforcing collective efforts to sustain transparency, accountability, and consumer trust across the sector.
