Gaurav Gogoi Suffers Defeat in Jorhat as BJP Secures Decisive Victory in Assam Assembly Elections
Gaurav Gogoi loses Jorhat Assembly seat to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami by over 20,000 votes as BJP wins 99 seats in Assam. Congress secures only 23 seats, reflecting its declining support among key communities in Upper Assam.
The outcome in Jorhat mirrored the broader electoral trend across Assam, where the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a commanding victory with 99 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while the Congress managed to win only 23 seats. The election results validated the projections made by exit polls, contradicting Gogoi’s earlier remarks.
Despite this defeat, Gaurav Gogoi retains his position as the Member of Parliament from Jorhat, having won the Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general elections. In that contest, he defeated Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi by a margin of 1.4 lakh votes, underscoring a contrasting electoral performance at the national level.
Hitendra Nath Goswami’s victory further solidifies his stronghold in the constituency. A seasoned political figure, he is a five-term Member of the Legislative Assembly, having represented Jorhat three times as an Asom Gana Parishad leader and twice as a Bharatiya Janata Party legislator. This latest win marks his third consecutive victory from the seat. In the current election, Goswami secured 59,000 votes, while Gaurav Gogoi received 39,000 votes.
The Congress party’s efforts to regain lost political ground in Assam, including leadership changes and an intensified campaign aimed at reconnecting with its traditional voter base, failed to yield results. The party struggled to rebuild trust among key communities such as the Ahom population, tea tribes, and Muslim voters, who once formed the foundation of its support in the Upper Assam region.
The election outcome highlights the Bharatiya Janata Party’s continued dominance in Assam and signals ongoing challenges for the Congress in re-establishing its influence in the state’s political landscape.
