Abhay Harne Takes Charge as Director (Operations) at Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited, Signals Push for Sustainable Energy Transition
Abhay Harne assumes charge as Director (Operations) at MAHAGENCO, bringing over 32 years of experience in the power sector. His leadership is set to drive operational efficiency, renewable energy expansion, and sustainable power generation aligned with Maharashtra’s long-term energy vision.
Harne steps into the position after serving as Director (Projects) while also holding additional charge as Director (Fuel). With more than 32 years of experience in the power sector, he brings extensive expertise in the operation, maintenance, and commissioning of thermal power units ranging from 210 MW to 660 MW supercritical units. His technical and administrative experience is expected to play a critical role in strengthening operational performance.
During his tenure, Harne has been instrumental in advancing MAHAGENCO’s capacity expansion strategy and renewable energy initiatives. He contributed significantly to the formulation of the organization’s Vision 2035 roadmap, aligned with the broader developmental framework of “Viksit Maharashtra 2047.” His work includes promoting diversified and sustainable energy projects such as solar power, pumped storage hydro projects, Small Modular Reactor nuclear initiatives, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and green hydrogen technologies.
He also played a key role in operationalizing the Gare Palma-II coal mine in Chhattisgarh, strengthening fuel security for the organization. In addition, he led strategic initiatives including the acquisition of the Sinnar-Nashik project in collaboration with NTPC and the execution of Memoranda of Understanding with leading organizations for renewable energy development. His efforts toward improving operational efficiency, optimizing fuel management, and reducing generation costs have been recognized as significant contributions.
Harne holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Industrial Electronics and a Master of Business Administration. In 2013, he was honored by the Government of Maharashtra for his outstanding contribution to the infrastructure sector, underscoring his long-standing impact in the field.
Upon assuming charge, Harne stated that his priority would be to enhance the efficiency of MAHAGENCO’s power stations while accelerating the organization’s transition toward sustainable and reliable energy generation. He emphasized the adoption of advanced technologies, operational improvements, and a strong commitment to environmentally responsible and cost-effective power generation to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply across the state.
The appointment comes at a crucial time as MAHAGENCO intensifies its focus on modernizing infrastructure and integrating renewable energy solutions, positioning itself as a key driver in Maharashtra’s long-term energy security and sustainability goals.
