Hot and Humid Conditions Grip Mumbai as IMD Forecasts Clear Skies with Possible Thundershowers

Mumbai experiences hot and humid weather as IMD forecasts clear skies with possible thundershowers. Temperatures may reach 38°C in suburbs, while AQI remains satisfactory. Vidarbha reels under extreme heat, touching 44°C, with health advisories issued for residents.

Mumbaikars woke up to a relatively pleasant Friday morning even as the city continued to witness hot and humid conditions typical of late April, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting mainly clear skies over Mumbai and its suburbs for the next 48 hours.

The weather bureau stated that the city could witness isolated rain or thundershowers towards the afternoon or evening. Despite this possibility, hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail, with daytime maximum temperatures likely to touch 36 degrees Celsius in Island City, while the suburbs may record slightly higher readings, going up to 38 degrees Celsius.

The air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai currently stands at 88, which falls in the satisfactory category, although it marks a slight decline from Thursday’s reading of 76. While the levels are not in the ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ range, sensitive groups such as children, elderly citizens, and residents with respiratory conditions may experience minor discomfort.

With temperatures climbing during the day, IMD has appealed to office-goers, outdoor workers, and students to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure between noon and 4 pm. Traffic police and BMC staff working in the open are particularly vulnerable to heat stress. Commuters using local trains and buses have been advised to carry water bottles and wear light, breathable clothing. Doctors have also recommended using sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, while parents have been urged to ensure children drink enough fluids and avoid strenuous outdoor sports during peak heat hours.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra continues to reel under intense heat conditions, with Vidarbha recording temperatures as high as 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall in parts of the state. Amravati recorded 44.4 degrees Celsius, the highest in Maharashtra, followed closely by Akola at 44.3 degrees Celsius, Wardha at 44.0 degrees Celsius, and Nagpur at 43.2 degrees Celsius.

In contrast, coastal areas remained relatively cooler, with the Konkan region, including Mumbai, recording lower temperatures. Mumbai registered 33.2 degrees Celsius and 25.6 degrees Celsius, while Santacruz recorded 35.9 degrees Celsius and 24.4 degrees Celsius. Alibag reported 33.4 degrees Celsius and 29.0 degrees Celsius, and Ratnagiri recorded 36.0 degrees Celsius and 25.8 degrees Celsius.
