International Observers Hail India’s ‘Festival of Democracy’ as 22 Nations Witness High-Tech Poll Management

International delegates from 22 nations have praised the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry as a "festival of democracy." Observing the International Election Visitors’ Programme, 38 officials lauded the use of EVMs, 100% webcasting transparency, and inclusive facilities like all-women booths, providing a global benchmark for large-scale electoral management.

The Election Commission has announced that international delegates from 22 countries expressed profound praise for the conduct of polls in India following an extensive observation mission across Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. Thirty-eight participants in the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) 2026 traversed these three regions on April 8 and 9 to scrutinize the immense scale and sophisticated management defining the Assembly elections. This high-level delegation commenced their assessment at dispatch and distribution centres, where they observed the meticulous movement of polling teams and essential materials through standardized procedures and precisely planned logistics.

Administrative rigor remained at the forefront as delegates engaged with chief electoral officers and police officials to dissect the complexities of election management and security arrangements. At specialized control rooms, the visitors reviewed the comprehensive system of 100% webcasting of polling stations, a technological feat they categorized as vital for ensuring transparency. On the April 9 polling day, the delegates witnessed the inaugural mock polls before visiting diverse polling stations in Kamrup Metro and Rural in Assam, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, and various sectors of Puducherry. These observers immersed themselves in the voting process, interacting directly with both the electorate and the polling staff.

The delegates encountered an inclusive electoral environment characterized by ramps, wheelchairs, volunteers, and crèche facilities. The mission highlighted specialized booths managed entirely by women and persons with disabilities, prompting many observers to label the arrangements as exceptionally well-organized. Paulus Shigwedha of Namibia noted he was very impressed with the preparation of facilities, specifically citing the wheelchair and crèche provisions. Technological oversight was further explored at district media monitoring centres, where teams reviewed the integration of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and continuous webcasting. Abubakarr Mahmoud Koroma from Sierra Leone lauded the use of EVMs, stating that the spirit of the event was like a festival and provided lessons for implementation in his home country.

Regional innovations added further depth to the observation, with Puducherry deploying drone monitoring and flying squads, while Kerala introduced a Gen Z-themed polling booth and rural Assam provided on-site health check-up facilities. These diverse elements led Branimir Farkas of Croatia to describe the Indian voting process as a true festival of democracy for the whole world, noting that the overwhelming enthusiasm of the voters served as a significant learning model. Uuc-Kib Espadas Ancona from Mexico corroborated this sentiment, affirming that the Indian election process is certainly a place to learn. As this massive democratic exercise continues, Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu are set for a single phase on April 23, while West Bengal will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The collective results for Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal are scheduled for announcement on May 4, marking the conclusion of this monumental administrative undertaking.
