Nitish Kumar Enters Rajya Sabha: A Seismic Shift in Bihar’s Political Landscape
Veteran leader Nitish Kumar takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP, marking a historic transition in Bihar’s power dynamics. After serving as the state's longest-serving Chief Minister since 2005, Kumar’s move to the upper house fulfills his goal of serving in all four legislative bodies. As the BJP prepares to appoint a new Chief Minister on April 14, the NDA prepares for a major structural shift.
The governing National Democratic Alliance is now poised to transfer effective control of the Bihar government to the BJP ahead of upcoming elections, with a new Chief Minister expected to be chosen on April 14. While Kumar may legally continue as Chief Minister for the next six months under constitutional regulations, a crucial gathering of Bihar BJP officials is currently underway in Delhi to finalize the plan for new state leadership. Amidst this transition, Kumar was also chosen as JD(U) president without opposition, as no other candidate submitted a nomination for the post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the veteran legislator, acknowledging his dedication to good governance and Bihar’s growth, while emphasizing that Kumar’s vast experience as a former Union Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee will elevate the dignity of the House.
The shift has been characterized by JD(U) leader Kushwaha as a formal conclusion to an era, noting that Kumar's twenty-year tenure, which began with his first appointment as Chief Minister in 2005, will be remembered for decades. Bihar BJP President Nitin Nabin dismissed any speculation of a rift within the alliance, asserting that "gathbandhan dharma" is being upheld and that all decisions are proceeding in an orderly manner under Kumar’s leadership. Having started his career as an MLA in 1985, Nitish Kumar remains the longest-serving leader in Bihar's history. His move to the Rajya Sabha concludes an extensive chapter of direct governance in the state, signaling a definitive change in the National Democratic Alliance’s local power structure while cementing his legacy as one of India's most seasoned and strategically adept political figures.
