Tiger Death Crisis in Madhya Pradesh Spurs Proposal for New Protection Force in Satpura Tiger Reserve

Rising tiger deaths in Madhya Pradesh’s Satpura Tiger Reserve have triggered a proposal for a new Tiger Protection Force. With 54 deaths in 2025 and continued losses in 2026, authorities aim to shift from reactive enforcement to preventive wildlife protection through specialised training.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh, known as the ‘Tiger State’ of India, is facing a chilling reality behind its triumphant slogan as a wave of tiger deaths, poisoning, electrocution, and violent encounters exposes deep vulnerabilities in its forests, prompting a significant administrative move to propose a new Tiger Protection Force in Satpura Tiger Reserve.

Madhya Pradesh recorded 54 tiger deaths in 2025, marking the highest annual count in the state since Project Tiger began. By the first week of April this year, reports indicated that around 16 tigers had already died, a figure that rose to 18 after another carcass was discovered in Umaria. The crisis has drawn judicial attention, with the Madhya Pradesh High Court stepping in over the rising deaths, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Satpura has emerged as one of the most disturbing flashpoints. In one case, a tiger was allegedly poisoned and then killed with electric wire by a man attempting to conceal an illegal opium field. In another incident, a four-month-old cub was found dead in the reserve following signs of a violent encounter. Tourists also captured a savage fight between two adult males in the Madhai range, intensifying concerns that the reserve is under severe territorial and ecological pressure.

Amid this atmosphere of fear and failure, the proposal for a new Tiger Protection Force has taken shape. Official communication accessed by NDTV states that selected youth are to be trained to make forest and wildlife protection in Satpura “more robust and effective.” The move raises a critical question about how this proposed unit differs from the existing Tiger Strike Force.

Madhya Pradesh already operates a State Tiger Strike Force along with five Regional Tiger Strike Forces. These units function as enforcement and response arms, designed to strike, raid, pursue, investigate, and respond to wildlife crime, effectively serving as the system’s offensive mechanism. In contrast, the proposed Tiger Protection Force is envisioned as a localized, defensive unit, custom-trained and embedded within the reserve to maintain a constant protection grid. While the Strike Force acts after danger emerges, the Protection Force is intended to prevent threats by remaining stationed where risks are escalating.

The seriousness of this initiative is reflected in its training blueprint. The syllabus for the Tiger Striking Force includes indoor modules covering administration, coordination with departments, office procedures, welfare schemes, intelligence gathering, the Wildlife Protection Act, criminal law, constitutional and human-rights basics, criminal investigation, evidence handling, and information technology. Outdoor modules include physical training, yoga, obstacle exercises, drill, camouflage, ambush tactics, jungle movement, a three-day jungle camp, and weapon training with maintenance and firing practice. The course spans 30 days and concludes with written examinations, interviews, and practical field assessments, forming a quasi-tactical security curriculum designed for hostile terrain rather than routine forest-guard duties.

Senior IPS officer and ADG Police Training Raja Babu Singh confirmed that Satpura’s leadership approached him with a request to train selected youth of the Tiger Protection Force at Pachmarhi. He stated that the reserve had been asked to specify the type of customised training required, including physical fitness, jungle search operations, gun firing, or other specialised skills. He further indicated that if similar requests emerge from other wildlife landscapes near police training schools, such training could be extended accordingly.

His statement is significant as it signals the first instance of a reserve-specific customised training request formally reaching the police training establishment, marking a potential shift in India’s wildlife protection strategy.

As tiger deaths mount and ecological pressures intensify, the proposed Tiger Protection Force represents a critical shift from reactive enforcement to proactive conservation, reflecting the urgency to safeguard one of India’s most iconic species within increasingly fragile forest landscapes.
