Cinematic Grandeur vs. Economic Reality: BJP’s ‘Dhurandhar’ Modi Edit Sparks Fierce Digital Divide

A viral video of PM Narendra Modi set to the high-octane "Dhurandhar" track has triggered a massive social media debate. While BJP supporters hail the cinematic edit as a show of strength, critics point to a disconnect with pressing national issues, including fuel price hikes and recent Parliament protests. The clash highlights the deepening divide in India’s digital political landscape.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again demonstrated its penchant for high-production digital outreach, but the latest attempt to bolster Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image has met with a remarkably fractured reception. A 30-second video uploaded to the party's official X (formerly Twitter) account features the Prime Minister adorned in traditional saffron robes, set to the rhythmic, high-energy pulses of the "Dhurandhar" track—a song that gained widespread popularity in late 2025 through a Ranveer Singh cinematic project. The clip, punctuated by a booming voiceover asserting, "You are still not ready for this," was intended as a projection of indomitable strength, yet it has instead become a lightning rod for broader national frustrations.

For the party's ideological base, the edit was a masterstroke of political branding. Supporters flooded social media with endorsements, characterizing the Prime Minister as the "real Dhurandhar" (meaning a formidable or skilled person) and praising the video for its epic, larger-than-life aesthetic. To this demographic, the clip reinforces the image of a leader unswayed by domestic or international pressures. However, the timing of the post has served as a catalyst for a sharp backlash from critics and even some within the party's sympathetic circles, who argue that the "optics of triumph" are mismatched with a grim economic backdrop.

The controversy unfolds as India grapples with the cascading effects of a volatile Gulf conflict, which has triggered severe oil shocks and a subsequent spike in domestic fuel prices. While the BJP’s digital team focused on cinematic appeal, the opposition pointed to the plight of stranded workers abroad and the lingering tension from the massive protests held outside Parliament just days ago on March 9. Critics dismissed the video as "cringeworthy," suggesting that stylized propaganda is an inadequate response to a nation facing inflationary pressure and industrial unrest.

Perhaps most notably, the polarization has seeped into the BJP’s own support base. Some traditional backers expressed discomfort with the overt reliance on temple-visit optics and the perceived persistence of caste-based political maneuvering, suggesting that the "Dhurandhar" persona may be losing its luster among those seeking more substantive policy updates over aesthetic displays. This digital skirmish underscores a significant challenge for modern political communication: as the gap between curated imagery and the lived reality of the citizenry widens, even the most sophisticated viral campaigns risk being seen as tone-deaf.
