Taiwan Highway Crash Kills Three After Drivers Stop in Lane, Three Injured
Three people were killed and three injured after a rental van and Tesla stopped in an inner lane on Taiwan’s National Freeway No. 1 near Miaoli County, before a Volvo struck from behind.
The incident occurred on August 19 at around 10:25 a.m. on Taiwan’s National Freeway No. 1 near Miaoli County, when a rental van lightly hit a Tesla.
After the collision, the drivers remained between the two vehicles in the inner lane. They did not pull the vehicles to the shoulder or set up warning triangles to alert approaching traffic.
Moments later, a Volvo struck the vehicles from behind. The crash killed the rental van driver, the Tesla driver and a passenger, while three other people were injured.

Officials stressed the importance of turning on hazard lights, placing warning signs or triangles far enough behind a stopped vehicle to alert approaching drivers, and clearing the traffic lane as quickly as possible.
The incident highlights the potentially fatal consequences of remaining in an active highway lane after a collision and the importance of promptly warning approaching traffic and moving vehicles to safety.
