Sewage Pipeline Burst at Majas Bus Depot in Jogeshwari East Forces Gate Closure, Disrupts Operations and Traffic in Mumbai

The incident led to foul-smelling sewage water flooding the area outside the depot, with the contaminated water spilling onto the adjoining road. The overflow created severe waterlogging and highly unsanitary conditions, making the stretch difficult to access and navigate.

According to local residents, the main entrance of the depot was shut after the pipeline rupture caused rapid accumulation of dirty water directly in front of the gate. The stagnant sewage spread across the road surface, severely affecting movement in the area. Residents described the situation as increasingly hazardous due to the continuous spread of contaminated water across the public roadway.

Residents living nearby have expressed serious concern over the public health risks arising from the stagnant sewage. They warned that such conditions could lead to the spread of waterborne diseases, particularly during the monsoon season when the risk of infection and contamination significantly increases. They have also criticised delays in addressing the issue, urging swift action from the concerned authorities.

The sewage flooding has also disrupted bus services operating from the Majas depot. While the main gate remains closed, authorities have reportedly opened the depot’s rear gate to allow buses to enter and exit, ensuring partial continuation of essential operations. However, commuters and transport personnel continue to face difficulties due to persistent waterlogging in the affected area.

Local civic activists have demanded immediate intervention from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and depot authorities. They have called for urgent repair of the damaged sewage pipeline, complete removal of accumulated stagnant water, and restoration of normal operations at the transport hub. Activists warned that continued delay could further worsen sanitation conditions and heighten health hazards for both residents and daily commuters.

As of the time of reporting, neither BEST management nor the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued any official statement regarding the cause of the pipeline burst or a timeline for completing repair work.
