Congress Announces Nationwide Agitation, Accuses BJP of “Vote Theft” and “Seat Theft” Amid Rising Economic Concerns

Congress has announced a nationwide agitation against inflation, unemployment, paper leaks, and farmers’ issues, accusing the BJP of shifting from vote theft to seat theft. Following a high-level meeting led by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, the party plans protests at all levels and challenges electoral and parliamentary processes.

In a sharp political escalation, the Congress party on Thursday announced a nationwide agitation against issues including price rise, unemployment, paper leak scandals, and agrarian distress, while accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government of shifting from “vote theft” to “seat theft.”

The decision was taken following a three-hour high-level meeting of the Congress leadership, which included party president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, general secretaries, and state unit chiefs. The leadership collectively resolved to launch a coordinated national movement within the next two to three months, with protests planned at national, state, and district levels.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said the party would intensify its political campaign across the country. He alleged that the government has failed to address key economic challenges and accused it of lacking moral responsibility. He stated that fuel prices continue to rise, unemployment is at its peak, students are facing severe difficulties, and every household is under pressure due to inflation. He identified price rise, unemployment, and paper leaks as the central issues affecting the nation.

Venugopal also criticized the electoral process, citing the rejection of Congress Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination in Madhya Pradesh, while alleging that Independent Rajya Sabha candidate supported by the National Democratic Alliance, Parimal Nathwani, had his nomination accepted despite errors. He said the party would challenge the matter through both political and legal channels. He further dismissed speculation regarding a possible Congress and Trinamool Congress merger, calling such reports baseless.

Separately, Congress general secretary in charge of communication Jairam Ramesh asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ambition of securing a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha would not be fulfilled. He claimed that the government’s efforts intensified after the defeat of the Delimitation Bill in the House, alleging that this led to attempts to bring in Members of Parliament from other parties. He added that no matter the actions of the Union Home Minister, the ruling party would not achieve a two-thirds majority required for advancing the Delimitation Bill.
