India–Bangladesh Consular Dialogue in New Delhi Advances Cooperation on Visa, Legal and Mobility Issues
The 4th India–Bangladesh Consular Dialogue in New Delhi focused on strengthening visa facilitation, repatriation, MLAT cooperation, extradition matters, and travel arrangements. Led by senior officials from both sides, the meeting reaffirmed commitment to enhanced coordination and people-to-people exchanges, with the next round scheduled in Dhaka.
The Indian delegation was led by Dr. Aman Puri, Joint Secretary, Consular, Passport and Visa Division, while the Bangladesh delegation was headed by Rokebul Haque, Director General (South Asia), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh. Both sides engaged in wide-ranging deliberations covering consular affairs, visa facilitation, repatriation processes, Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty matters, and extradition-related cases.
During the meeting, the two delegations placed significant emphasis on enhancing existing coordination mechanisms to ensure more efficient handling of legal and administrative processes affecting citizens of both countries. The discussions also focused on improving procedural cooperation in matters involving cross-border mobility and judicial assistance.
A key outcome of the dialogue was the agreement to further strengthen the bilateral Revised Travel Arrangement, with the objective of facilitating smoother movement of nationals between India and Bangladesh. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding people-to-people exchanges, recognizing their importance in deepening bilateral ties and fostering mutual understanding.
The two countries also agreed to convene the next round of the dialogue in Dhaka on a mutually convenient date, reflecting continued engagement at the institutional level.
Established in 2017, the India–Bangladesh Consular Dialogue mechanism serves as a structured platform to enhance communication and cooperation on consular, visa, and mutual legal assistance matters. The latest round underscored its continuing relevance in addressing emerging challenges and strengthening bilateral administrative coordination.
The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment from both sides to maintain regular engagement and reinforce frameworks that support legal cooperation, mobility facilitation, and sustained diplomatic interaction between India and Bangladesh.
