He described The Hague as a living symbol of Indian friendship and expressed surprise at the festive atmosphere, saying it felt as though he was attending a celebration in India rather than in the Netherlands. The gathering began with chants of “Victory to Mother India,” reflecting the enthusiasm of the diaspora community.
Highlighting the significance of The Hague, known globally as the “City of Peace and Justice,” the Prime Minister said the presence and energy of the Indian community had transformed the city into a living symbol of India–Netherlands friendship. He remarked that while passports, addresses and time zones may change, the spirit of celebration and cultural identity of people of Indian origin remains unchanged across generations.
Recalling his earlier visits to the Netherlands, the Prime Minister spoke about his long-standing engagement with the Indian community in the country and described their journey as one of migration, resilience, cultural preservation and progress despite hardships. He noted that generations earlier, no one would have imagined that Indian identity would remain so strongly intact across oceans.
He further acknowledged the appreciation extended by Dutch leadership towards the Indian diaspora, noting their significant contribution to the Netherlands’ economy and society. On behalf of the people of India, he conveyed greetings to the government and citizens of the Netherlands.
Emphasising cultural continuity, he said that while many global cultures have faded over time, India’s civilisational values continue to remain alive through its diaspora. He noted that although languages and surroundings may change, families have preserved their traditions, memories and values, continuing to pass them on to younger generations.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of Indian community radio stations in the Netherlands, stating that they help preserve Indian music, language and traditions while connecting younger generations with their cultural roots.
Referring to a significant date in his political journey, he recalled May 16, 2014, when the results of the Lower House of Parliament elections were announced, leading to the formation of a stable government with a clear majority after decades. He said that the trust of citizens since then has continuously strengthened his commitment to public service.
Reflecting on his public life, he stated that he considers the Indian diaspora his extended family and described his journey as a transition from “I” to “We,” expressing gratitude for the continued support and affection he has received over the years.
He further noted that in 13 years as Chief Minister and 12 years as Prime Minister, the support of 250 million voters has been a significant source of strength, describing it as a valuable democratic trust.
Speaking about India’s development trajectory, the Prime Minister said the country is now aiming not only for transformation but for the fastest and most effective progress across all sectors. He highlighted the growing aspirations within India and the limitless efforts being made to meet them.
He cited the achievements of Indian youth in sectors such as start-ups, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and drone technology, noting that India now hosts the world’s third-largest start-up ecosystem. He added that India is currently undergoing an era of unprecedented transformation, supported by large-scale public welfare initiatives including the Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme.
The diaspora welcomed the Prime Minister with traditional cultural performances representing regional dance forms, including Lavani and Bihu. The audience enthusiastically waved the national flag and raised slogans expressing support for the Prime Minister and celebrating India.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for the grand reception and appreciated the cultural performances presented by the community.
During the visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, and hold bilateral talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten to strengthen diplomatic, economic and technological cooperation between India and the Netherlands.
He is also expected to engage with leading business figures from the Netherlands to further expand investment and strategic partnerships between the two countries.
The visit underscored the growing global presence of the Indian diaspora and reinforced India’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships while preserving its cultural identity abroad.
