Stalin, who assumed office in 2021 and faced what is described as his first electoral defeat in 35 years, also lost his Kolathur constituency to TVK candidate V S Babu. Following the outcome, he submitted his resignation letter to the office of Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
In a statement posted on X in Tamil, Stalin reflected on his party’s political journey, noting that the DMK has held power six times and has experienced both victory and defeat in equal measure. He stressed that the party’s ideology remains paramount regardless of electoral outcomes.
“The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has been in power six times. There is no victory we have not seen; there is no defeat we have not faced,” he stated, adding that safeguarding ideology is central to the party’s political mission.
Stalin, aged 73, has served as a legislator for seven terms, winning the Thousand Lights constituency four times and Kolathur three times.
He also acknowledged the electoral performance of TVK, which emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 of 234 seats. He noted that TVK secured 17.43 lakh more votes than the DMK alliance, which won 74 seats, while the vote share difference stood at 3.52 per cent. Stalin further stated that the DMK alliance received 1.54 crore votes.
Despite the setback, Stalin asserted that the trust placed in the DMK by the electorate remains significant. He said that each vote received by the party is regarded as an invaluable expression of public confidence.
He added that the DMK will continue to function as a strong opposition force, stating that if in power, the party would implement welfare schemes, and if not, it would actively fight for public demands. He concluded by affirming confidence that the party would return to power in the future.
