Mumbai Metro Launch Sees Stark Contrast in Ridership as Line 9 Triumphs While Line 2B Struggles
The first day of Mumbai Metro operations for two new corridors showed a sharp contrast in commuter response. While Metro Line 9 saw strong turnout, the 5.38 km Metro Line 2B faced limited ridership following its inauguration by CM Devendra Fadnavis. Officials expect a surge in passengers only after the Line 2B extension connects Mankhurd to the Chembur Naka Monorail.
On Mumbai Metro Line 2B, the initial response remained muted with trains largely operating with very few passengers throughout the day. The currently operational 5.38 km section provides a suburban rail interchange exclusively at Mankhurd railway station, a factor that officials acknowledge has limited the corridor’s immediate usefulness to the broader commuting public. Metro services on this specific stretch are scheduled to run every nine and a half minutes, accounting for approximately 209 daily trips.
MMRDA officials have indicated that ridership figures are expected to undergo an upward trajectory once the line extends further to Chembur Naka. This future expansion is considered critical as it will facilitate a strategic connection with the Mumbai Monorail. This launch highlights the complex dynamics of urban transit integration, where the success of multi-billion rupee infrastructure projects remains heavily dependent on the immediate accessibility of key interchange hubs and the completion of vital network links.
