India’s First Seaplane Test Flight Achieved at Ganga Barrage, Rishikesh

India achieves a major aviation breakthrough as Skyhop Aviation successfully tests the country’s first seaplane at the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh. Founder Avani Singh confirms plans for commercial operations following air transport certification, with further expansion proposed for 19-seater aircraft services across five islands in the Lakshadweep region to boost tourism and connectivity.

In a landmark achievement for the nation’s water-based aviation sector, India’s first seaplane successfully completed a critical test flight at the Ganga Barrage in Rishikesh. This milestone marks a strategic advancement in utilizing India’s expansive coastlines and inland waterways to bridge transportation gaps, specifically targeting regions where the construction of conventional airports remains geographically or logistically unfeasible.

The operation, spearheaded by Skyhop Aviation, aims to revolutionize tourism connectivity through the deployment of commercial seaplane services. On April 6, the company’s aircraft demonstrated impeccable operational capability by executing a smooth take-off and landing on the waters of the Ganga River. This successful trial serves as a definitive proof of concept for the feasibility of maintaining regular seaplane services within the rugged terrain of the Rishikesh region.

Avani Singh, the founder of Skyhop Aviation, characterized the test as a major milestone in the evolution of domestic transit. Currently, the company is navigating the rigorous process of obtaining the necessary air transport certifications required for public service. Singh confirmed that full-scale commercial operations are slated to commence immediately upon securing the final regulatory approvals.

Beyond the Himalayan foothills, Skyhop Aviation is preparing an ambitious expansion into the Lakshadweep archipelago. The company has submitted an initial proposal to operate 19-seater aircraft designed to connect five distinct islands within the region. This initiative underscores a broader national commitment to enhancing accessibility and fostering economic growth through innovative aerial solutions, positioning seaplane technology as a cornerstone of future Indian infrastructure.
