Assam Agricultural Markets: Lentil Prices Skyrocket as Vegetable Inflow Stabilizes Across Districts

Assam’s agricultural markets see a dramatic rise in Lentil (Masur) prices, reaching nearly 9,500 per quintal, far exceeding the 2026-27 MSP. Meanwhile, vegetable markets remain stable with healthy arrivals of onions and potatoes. Get the full breakdown of district-wise commodity prices and market trends across Assam in our latest professional report.

The agricultural landscape in Assam is currently witnessing a significant surge in pulse valuations, with Masur Dal leading a bullish trend that far outpaces government-mandated benchmarks. As the 2026-27 marketing season gains momentum, market data from across the state’s districts reveals a high-demand environment where essential commodities are commanding impressive premiums. While the Union Government has established a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of 6,700.00 per quintal for Lentils (Masur), local market realizations in Assam have soared to an average of 9,402.40, even touching 9,487.23 in specific trading hubs. This substantial price gap highlights a tightening supply-demand curve, with arrivals currently recorded at 167 metric tonnes, suggesting that traders are willing to pay a heavy premium to secure available stocks.

In the perishables sector, the state’s vegetable markets are displaying a more varied pricing structure, though they remain essential barometers of local food inflation. Onion prices have shown relative stability, trading in the range of 1,897.33 to 2,086.73 per quintal across various markets. With total arrivals reaching approximately 226 metric tonnes, the supply chain for this kitchen staple appears consistent enough to prevent drastic price shocks. Similarly, Potato arrivals have been robust, with a combined inflow of over 334 metric tonnes keeping prices anchored between 1,063.08 and 1,119.69 per quintal. These figures indicate a healthy harvest season for tuber crops, ensuring that consumer costs remain within a predictable bracket despite the lack of a formal price floor for these non-MSP commodities.

The tomato market, however, remains more volatile, reflecting the inherent sensitivity of the crop to logistics and local production cycles. Prices for tomatoes have fluctuated between 1,597.37 and 2,075.46 per quintal, supported by modest arrivals totaling nearly 77 metric tonnes. The disparity in pricing between different district centers suggests that localized supply disruptions may be influencing the cost for wholesalers. Administrative observers note that while the high prices for pulses like lentils provide a massive financial boon for the state's farmers, the persistent cost of vegetables requires a balanced approach to ensure food security for the broader population.

These market dynamics underscore the unique economic position of Assam's agricultural sector, where regional demand frequently pushes market prices well above national support levels. For the farming community, the current trend in pulses represents a highly profitable window that could encourage a shift toward more diversified crop cycles in the coming years. However, for policymakers and district administrations, the challenge remains in maintaining the delicate equilibrium between ensuring remunerative prices for growers and protecting consumers from the inflationary pressures seen in the vegetable and pulse segments. As the season progresses, the state’s ability to manage these price differentials will be crucial in determining the overall economic health of the rural heartland.
