A 65-year-old temple priest in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a seven-year-old boy after luring him to a secluded spot. Villagers intervened by breaking into the room, leading to swift police action and charges under POCSO Act amid community outrage.

In a disturbing incident that has shaken a rural community in northern India, police in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested a 65-year-old temple priest accused of sexually assaulting a young child.The suspect, Ramesh Chandra Puri, originally from Bihar's Siwan district, had been serving as the priest at a local village temple for nearly two decades. Authorities say the assault occurred on Monday when Puri allegedly lured the seven-year-old boy—who was playing nearby—to a secluded area near the temple and committed the act.Villagers grew suspicious after noticing the prolonged absence of the child and the closed door of the priest's quarters. Acting on their concerns, they forced open the door, rescued the boy, and immediately alerted the police. Officers arrived promptly at the scene, took Puri into custody, and initiated questioning.The child was rushed for medical examination to document the allegations. Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim's family, police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody.The revelation has sparked widespread anger among residents, who are demanding swift justice. Local law enforcement has assured the community of a thorough investigation and strict action against the perpetrator.This case underscores the vulnerability of children in trusted community settings and highlights ongoing concerns over child safety in rural areas, where institutions like temples are often seen as safe havens. As the legal process unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened vigilance and robust protective measures to prevent such betrayals of trust.
