Fire Ravages Remote Chamoli Village, Leaving Families Homeless and Losses Running Into Lakhs

A sudden fire engulfed Mehar village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Wednesday, destroying three to four homes and causing losses worth several lakhs. Police and ITBP teams joined villagers in firefighting efforts. Authorities are assessing damage and initiating relief for affected families.

A sudden fire tore through Mehar village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Wednesday, reducing several homes to ashes and plunging multiple families into distress. The blaze, which broke out without warning in the border-area settlement under the Jyotirmath development block, destroyed three to four residential houses and wiped out all household belongings stored inside.

According to local accounts, flames spread rapidly through the closely built homes, giving residents little time to salvage their possessions. Villagers were the first to respond, rushing to the scene and attempting to control the fire using whatever means were available. Their efforts were soon reinforced by teams from the local police and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), who arrived promptly after being alerted.

After sustained firefighting and rescue efforts, the fire was finally brought under control, preventing it from spreading further into the village. No injuries were reported, but the material damage has been described as extensive, with losses estimated to run into several lakhs of rupees as essential household goods were completely destroyed.

Officials said the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The district administration has begun assessing the extent of the damage and has initiated the process to provide relief and assistance to the affected families.
