Hydrogen Push Gains Visibility as Union Minister Prahlad Joshi Arrives at Parliament in Toyota Mirai

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi arrived at Parliament in a Toyota Mirai, one of India’s few hydrogen-powered cars, highlighting the government’s push toward clean fuel technology and the growing role of hydrogen mobility in the nation’s green-energy transition.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi drew attention on Wednesday when he arrived at Parliament in a Toyota Mirai, one of only three hydrogen-powered cars currently operating in India. His choice of transport stood out at the ongoing parliamentary session, offering a symbolic endorsement of emerging green mobility technologies at a time when the government is actively exploring alternative clean-energy pathways.

The Toyota Mirai, deployed in India as part of a pilot project to study the feasibility of hydrogen-based mobility, has been positioned by officials and industry experts as a potential harbinger of the next phase of sustainable transport. Joshi’s use of the vehicle underscored the Centre’s emphasis on promoting hydrogen fuel-cell technology, which produces zero emissions and is considered a crucial component of long-term decarbonisation efforts.

While no formal statement was issued, ministerial sources noted that the move aligns with the government’s broader agenda of encouraging advanced clean-fuel systems and accelerating research adoption in public and private transport segments. The visual of a senior cabinet member arriving in a rare hydrogen-powered car also helped spotlight the evolving conversation around India’s transition to greener energy solutions.

Joshi’s brief but symbolic arrival served as a reminder of the country’s growing commitment to hydrogen-based mobility, signalling policy continuity and an expanding national focus on next-generation automotive technologies that could reshape India’s energy and environmental landscape.
