Fact-checkers have confirmed that the footage did not originate in Nepal. The video was recorded in India’s Assam region weeks earlier and shows a pet elephant helping its owner during flooding.
The misattribution emerged as footage of flood rescues in Nepal was being widely shared following the August 26 disaster. However, the viral elephant video was found to have no connection to the Nepal flash flood.
Other similar videos from Uttar Pradesh were also circulated with false claims linking them to the Nepal disaster. These clips were similarly misattributed.

The identification of the original Assam footage underscores the importance of verifying the source and location of viral videos before linking them to major disasters.
