Cabinet Applauds Narendra Modi as He Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister in Consecutive Terms

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in uninterrupted terms, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office and surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record. The Union Cabinet passed a resolution in his honour as world leaders congratulated him on the historic democratic milestone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in uninterrupted terms, surpassing the tenure record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Marking the historic milestone, the Union Cabinet passed a resolution applauding Modi’s achievement, while Cabinet members gave him a standing ovation in recognition of his continuous service in office.

According to government figures, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister on Wednesday, overtaking Nehru’s elected tenure of 4,398 days. The development places Modi at the top of the list of elected Prime Ministers who have served continuously without interruption since assuming office through the democratic electoral process.

Nehru, who first assumed office following the 1952 general elections, remained Prime Minister until his death on May 27, 1964. His tenure as head of the interim government between 1947 and 1952 is not included in the elected tenure comparison, as India had not yet conducted general elections during that period.

Modi first took office on May 26, 2014, after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a majority in the Lok Sabha elections. He began his second term on May 30, 2019, and was sworn in for a third consecutive term on June 9, 2024, extending his uninterrupted tenure in the country’s highest executive office.
