Mumbai Erupts in Political Firestorm Over Animal Sacrifice Dispute Amid Eid al-Adha Tensions

A political and social controversy has intensified in Mumbai over animal sacrifice practices linked to Eid al-Adha, involving sharp exchanges between political leaders, allegations of selective criticism, and multiple housing society disputes. Authorities including Mumbai Police and BMC have intervened to maintain law and order amid rising tensions.

A political controversy has intensified across Mumbai and several adjoining areas of Maharashtra over animal sacrifice practices linked to Eid al-Adha, as heated political rhetoric and community-level disputes continue to escalate tensions.

The issue gained momentum after a live television debate between Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Prem Shukla and Samajwadi Party leader Rajkumar Bhati, where a sharp exchange took place over the symbolism and legality of goat and pig references in the context of animal sacrifice traditions.

The controversy further escalated after Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut launched a strong attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. Speaking to media representatives, Raut alleged inconsistencies in criticism of animal sacrifice practices, citing the Kamakhya Devi Temple in Assam. He questioned, “Those who are speaking about sacrifice should tell how many sacrifices have taken place at the Kamakhya Devi Temple. Maharashtra is a land of meat eaters. This is the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We are Kshatriyas and Marathas. We will continue such sacrifices.”

In another statement made in Mumbai, Raut accused political forces of using religion as a tool for division. He said that the issue was being politicized ahead of elections to create communal tension and warned that repeated provocation could lead to unrest. He further alleged that such actions were intended to create divisions between religious communities and could potentially result in violence.

Raut also referred to reported practices at the Kamakhya Devi Temple, claiming that animal sacrifices, including the slaughter of 55 buffaloes, were being selectively justified. He argued that if such practices are acceptable in one context, they should not be criticized in another.

Separately, former Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament Kirit Somaiya raised objections regarding alleged illegal animal slaughter activities in Mumbai’s Mankhurd, Deonar, and Govandi areas ahead of Eid al-Adha. He urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Mumbai Police to take immediate action. Somaiya stated that while animal sacrifice is a part of religious tradition and must be respected, it should only be conducted at designated locations approved by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and not in residential neighborhoods where it could disturb public order.

Tensions had already surfaced earlier in Mumbai when a dispute broke out in a housing society in Goregaon over animal sacrifice arrangements, leading to intervention by Mumbai Police. Authorities later revoked permission for animal sacrifice within the society premises and decided to remove animals from the residential complex to maintain law and order.

A similar dispute was also reported at Sagar Park Society in Ghatkopar West, where disagreements emerged over the conduct of animal sacrifice within the residential complex, further adding to the growing list of localized conflicts across the city.

As administrative authorities intervene and political leaders continue to exchange sharp statements, the controversy has highlighted rising sensitivities around religious practices, public spaces, and law enforcement in urban residential communities across Mumbai.
