Viral Haridwar Video Sparks Outrage After Alleged Dumping of Chicken Biryani Rice into Ganga River

A viral video from Haridwar shows two men allegedly dumping chicken biryani rice into the Ganga River, sparking widespread outrage over pollution and religious sensitivity. The incident triggered heated online debates, demands for strict legal action, and renewed focus on river conservation amid growing concerns over environmental degradation and civic responsibility.

A viral video from Haridwar in Uttarakhand has triggered widespread public outrage after two men were allegedly seen dumping chicken biryani rice into the Ganga River. The footage, which has rapidly circulated across social media platforms, shows locals confronting the two men near the riverbank after they reportedly emptied rice from a drum into the water.

In the video, one of the accused is seen leaving the scene on a motorcycle, while another is stopped on the spot and questioned by visibly angry locals. Members of the public can be heard questioning why the river was being polluted and why food waste was being discarded into the Ganga.

The incident has ignited a heated online debate involving environmental responsibility, civic conduct, and religious sentiment, given the Ganga’s status as a sacred river for millions across India.

According to local reports and social media accounts, saints and devotees in Haridwar expressed strong anger over the alleged act. Many users described the incident as deeply disrespectful toward the Ganga, which holds profound religious significance for a large section of the population. Several individuals demanded strict legal action against those involved, stating that such actions contribute further to the already critical pollution levels of the river.

One social media user stated that the Ganga is already suffering due to pollution and that such incidents worsen its condition. Another user remarked that dumping non-vegetarian food into the river deeply hurts religious sentiments and should be treated as a criminal offence. Some users also tagged Haridwar Police and political leaders, demanding immediate arrest and strict punishment for the accused.

At the same time, reactions remained divided. While many condemned the act, others emphasized that river pollution is a far larger systemic issue extending beyond isolated incidents. One user questioned why sewage discharge and industrial chemical waste entering the Ganga often receive less public scrutiny. Another post highlighted that poor civic awareness and negligence remain major concerns in protecting rivers and public spaces.

Some users also criticized attempts to frame the issue as a communal or religious controversy, arguing that all rivers and water bodies must be protected from dumping regardless of belief systems. However, certain online comments escalated into extreme and violent demands for harsh punishment, while others called for environmental awareness campaigns and community service initiatives instead of aggressive responses.

The Haridwar video surfaced just days after a similar controversy in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh drew national attention. In March, eight men were accused of disposing of leftover chicken biryani into the Ganga during an iftar gathering. The case triggered protests and strong reactions on social media.

Recently, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to all eight accused in separate rulings. Justice Rajiv Lochan Shukla granted bail to five accused, while Justice Jitendra Kumar Sinha granted bail to the remaining three. As recorded in court observations, three accused individuals, Mohammad Sameer, Mohammad Ahmad Raza, and Mohammad Faizan, apologized before the court if any religious sentiments had been hurt. They also reportedly assured the court that they would not repeat such actions in the future.

Their legal representatives argued that the accused had been falsely implicated, had no prior criminal record, and had remained in custody since March 17.

The latest Haridwar incident once again underscores the sensitive intersection between environmental protection and religious sentiment surrounding the Ganga River. For millions, the river is not only a vital water source but also a deeply revered spiritual symbol.

Environmental experts and activists have repeatedly warned about increasing pollution in the Ganga caused by sewage discharge, industrial waste, plastic dumping, and public negligence. Many social media users stressed that the focus must remain on preserving river cleanliness rather than turning such incidents into political or communal disputes. Others called for stricter monitoring and awareness efforts in and around major religious sites to prevent dumping and littering.

As of now, no official confirmation has been issued regarding the registration of a police case in connection with the viral Haridwar video. The footage continues to circulate widely online, with growing public demand for accountability and action against those involved.

The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between environmental responsibility and public sentiment, reinforcing the urgent need for stronger civic discipline and effective protection of major water bodies.
