In Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Hamza Burhan, an alleged mastermind linked to the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Muzaffarabad. Burhan had been designated a terrorist by the Government of India in 2022 and was associated with the banned terror outfit Al Badr. His death has once again brought focus to individuals accused of orchestrating one of the deadliest terror attacks on Indian security personnel in recent years.
In a separate development, an Air India flight operating from Delhi to Bengaluru suffered a tailstrike while landing at Kempegowda International Airport. The airline confirmed that all passengers and crew members disembarked safely without injuries. Following the incident, the aircraft was grounded for a detailed technical inspection, while the scheduled return flight from Bengaluru to Delhi was cancelled. Air India stated that the matter would be investigated in accordance with established aviation safety procedures.
Meanwhile, the X account of the satirical online collective known as Cockroach Janta Party was withheld in India shortly after the group gained viral attention on social media platforms. The collective emerged amid controversy surrounding remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during a court hearing. The Chief Justice later clarified that his comments had been misrepresented. Despite the restriction, the group launched a new account and continued publishing political satire online, keeping the controversy active in digital discourse.
Judicial scrutiny intensified in West Bengal after the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to constitute a Special Investigation Team under its Joint Director for the eastern region to examine allegations that certain aspects of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case had been suppressed. The court ordered the investigation team to submit a detailed status report by June 25. The case relates to the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor within the hospital premises and has continued to attract widespread public attention and legal oversight.
On the international front, a report by the United States Congressional Research Service revealed that at least 42 American military aircraft were either lost or damaged during military operations against Iran launched on February 28. The reported losses included fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, refuelling aircraft and surveillance platforms. The report further stated that the estimated cost of the military campaign had risen to 29 billion dollars, highlighting the growing operational and financial burden of the conflict on Washington.
The developments collectively reflect a period of heightened geopolitical tension, domestic institutional scrutiny and growing concerns over security and governance, both within India and across the international landscape.
