CBI Probe Recommended in Twisha Sharma Death Case as Madhya Pradesh Government Seeks Central Takeover

In an official statement issued on Friday, the Home Department of Madhya Pradesh confirmed that communication has been sent to the Government of India seeking transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The move signals the state’s approval for a central agency-led probe into the circumstances surrounding the case.

The matter pertains to the death of Twisha Sharma, who was found dead on May 12, 2026, at Bag Mugalia Extension in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal. Authorities have already registered a criminal case at Katara Hills Police Station under Crime Number 133/2026.

The First Information Report includes charges under Sections 80(2), 85, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. The case has been registered as a dowry-related death investigation.

The government’s statement clarified that approval has been granted under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, allowing officers of the Delhi Special Police Establishment, under which the CBI functions, to exercise jurisdiction across the entire state of Madhya Pradesh for the purpose of investigation. Consent has also been extended for inquiry into all related offences, including abetment and criminal conspiracy linked to the incident.

The investigation proposal follows days of public attention and demands for a transparent and independent probe, including a meeting between Twisha Sharma’s family and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, during which the family requested a CBI-led investigation.

The death has triggered widespread concern and allegations of dowry harassment, intensifying calls from multiple quarters for an impartial and centralised inquiry.

With the state government’s consent now in place, the CBI is expected to formally take over the case after completion of procedural requirements and receipt of case records from the Madhya Pradesh Police, potentially reshaping the direction of the investigation.

The development marks a decisive step toward a centrally supervised investigation aimed at ensuring procedural fairness, transparency, and accountability in a case that has drawn significant public and administrative scrutiny.
