Assam Assembly Election 2026: BJP Secures Landslide Victory With 102 Seats, Himanta Biswa Sarma Returns to Power

The 2026 Assam Assembly election delivered a historic mandate to the BJP, which won 102 of 126 seats and secured a third consecutive term in power under Himanta Biswa Sarma. Congress suffered a major setback, while voter turnout reached a record 85.96 percent, marking the highest participation in the state’s electoral history.

The 2026 Assam Assembly election delivered a sweeping mandate in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which secured 102 of the 126 seats and retained power in the state for a third consecutive term. The emphatic victory ensured the continuation of the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, reinforcing the party’s dominance in one of its most strategically important states in the Northeast.

The Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha suffered a major electoral setback, finishing with only 21 seats in the Assembly. The Congress party itself managed to win 19 seats, registering a decline from its previous tally, while its alliance partners failed to secure any significant breakthrough across the state.

One of the most closely monitored contests unfolded in Jorhat, where Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi was defeated by BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes. The election marked Gogoi’s first attempt to enter state assembly politics. Soon after the results were declared, Congress Assam poll in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh resigned from his position, taking responsibility for the party’s disappointing performance.

Among other political parties, the All India United Democratic Front secured two seats, while Raijor Dal also won two seats in the election.

The election recorded a voter turnout of 85.96 percent, the highest in Assam Assembly election history, according to Election Commission data. The turnout represented an increase of 3.54 percentage points compared with the previous Assembly election. Women voters registered strong participation in several constituencies, contributing significantly to the record polling figures.

The BJP entered the election as the ruling party after securing victory in the 2021 Assam Assembly polls and successfully retaining power in the state. The 2026 mandate further extended the party’s political dominance in Assam, which remains a key state for the BJP’s broader strategy in the Northeast region.

Following the declaration of results, the BJP leadership moved swiftly to form the government. Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term along with members of his cabinet, signaling continuity in governance and administration.

The outcome also reshaped the political opposition in Assam. Despite its reduced tally, the Congress remained the principal opposition party in the state Assembly, while the BJP’s decisive mandate strengthened its position as the dominant political force in the region.
