Indian Railways Sanctions ₹362 Crore Expansion of Kavach Safety System Across Northern Railway Network
Indian Railways has sanctioned a ₹362 crore expansion of the Kavach automatic train protection system across Northern Railway routes, covering Firozpur and Jammu divisions. The project spans 1,478 route km, enhancing safety on key corridors including Jammu Tawi, Katra, Pathankot, and Baramulla, improving operational reliability and accident prevention.
The approved project involves the deployment of Kavach over nearly 1,478 route kilometres covering crucial sections of the Firozpur and Jammu divisions, marking a major step in strengthening operational safety infrastructure on high-priority corridors.
Under the initiative, Kavach will be installed across nearly 1,000 route kilometres on the remaining sections of the Firozpur Division. This phase of the project has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of about 241 crore rupees and is aimed at enhancing safety standards on a broad network of operational routes.
In the Jammu Division, the system will be implemented across multiple strategic railway sections, including the Jalandhar City Junction–Jammu Tawi–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra route, the Batala–Pathankot Junction section, and the Banihal–Baramulla corridor. These installations will collectively cover around 466 route kilometres and have been sanctioned at a cost of nearly 121 crore rupees.
Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system developed in India to prevent train collisions by automatically applying brakes in case of unsafe operational conditions. The system also provides continuous support to locomotive pilots by enabling real-time communication between locomotives, signalling infrastructure, and trackside equipment, thereby ensuring safer train movement across the network.
The expansion of Kavach across these strategically important and high-density routes is expected to significantly enhance operational safety, improve service reliability, and ensure more efficient train movement across Northern Railway’s critical corridors.
By advancing the deployment of this indigenous safety technology, Indian Railways continues to reinforce its commitment to modernising infrastructure while prioritising passenger and operational safety across the national rail network.
