India Emerging as Global Hub for Aircraft Leasing and Financing, Says Ram Mohan Naidu at GIFT City Summit
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said India is rapidly emerging as a global hub for aircraft leasing and financing at the India Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit 2.0 in GIFT City, Gandhinagar. He highlighted India’s aviation growth, projected fleet expansion, seaplane operations in Lakshadweep, and major leasing agreements signed at the summit.
Delivering the keynote address at the summit, the Minister said Gujarat has become India’s gateway to the global aviation financing sector, with GIFT City leading the transformation into an international centre for aircraft leasing and financing activities.
Highlighting the unprecedented growth of the aviation sector, Mr. Naidu stated that India has now emerged as the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market. He revealed that domestic passenger traffic in 2026 reached 191 million, underlining the scale and pace of expansion across the country’s aviation ecosystem.
The Minister further noted that India’s current commercial aircraft fleet of 1,100 planes is projected to triple by 2035, reflecting the country’s rapidly growing demand for air travel and aviation infrastructure. He stressed that the government’s objective extends beyond fleet expansion and focuses on building a complete aviation ecosystem capable of competing with and leading the global industry.
Calling upon industry stakeholders to view aircraft as a long-term financial infrastructure asset, Mr. Naidu said the aviation sector will play a crucial role in achieving the national development vision of a developed India. He emphasized that strengthening domestic leasing and financing capabilities would reduce external dependence and position India as a powerful player in global aviation finance.
In a significant announcement aimed at improving regional connectivity, the Minister said seaplane operations will soon commence in Lakshadweep. The initiative is expected to enhance transportation access and tourism connectivity across the island region.
The summit also witnessed the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding and major announcements by leading aviation companies to strengthen aircraft leasing activities at GIFT City. The developments marked another major step in India’s efforts to establish itself as a global aviation financing and leasing powerhouse.
