Prime Minister Narendra Modi Receives FAO’s Agricola Medal for India’s Landmark Food Security Transformation

The recognition comes during a period marked by expanded global attention on India’s agricultural policies and welfare-driven food distribution systems. Prime Minister Modi, serving as India’s head of government and the first Indian Prime Minister in three decades to visit the FAO headquarters in Rome, used the occasion to highlight key national initiatives aimed at strengthening food access and farmer support across the country.

Central to India’s food security framework is the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), which currently provides free food grains to approximately 810 million beneficiaries. Alongside this, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi continues to extend direct financial assistance to more than 90 million farmers, reinforcing rural economic stability through structured income transfers.

Officials also underscored India’s development of nearly 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties, designed to strengthen agricultural output amid increasing environmental pressures. The country now ranks among the world’s leading producers of rice, wheat, fruits, vegetables, and milk, reflecting a structural shift from historical food shortages toward agricultural self-reliance and global leadership in production.

While the recognition highlights India’s progress in scaling food distribution and agricultural productivity, observers note that certain rural regions continue to face structural challenges, particularly in income stability and resource access.

The Agricola Medal is widely regarded as one of the highest recognitions in global agricultural governance, and this award positions India’s food security model as a significant reference point in international policy discussions.
