The successful trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation system, known as TARA, represents India’s first indigenous glide weapon system designed to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided munitions. The test was conducted yesterday in the coastal region of Odisha, demonstrating the operational potential of the advanced system.
The system has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad in collaboration with other laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organisation. The weapon is engineered as a low-cost, state-of-the-art solution aimed at significantly enhancing the accuracy and lethality of existing unguided munitions, enabling the effective neutralisation of ground-based targets.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Indian Air Force, Development-cum-Production Partners, and industry stakeholders for the successful maiden flight trial. He described the achievement as a crucial step forward in strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence technology and advancing indigenous capabilities.
The development programme has been executed in partnership with Development-cum-Production Partners and multiple Indian industries, many of which have already initiated production activities for the system, indicating a swift transition from development to manufacturing readiness.
The successful trial underscores India’s growing capability in advanced weapon systems and highlights the strengthening collaboration between defence research institutions and domestic industry in achieving strategic technological independence.
The achievement marks a pivotal moment in India’s defence modernisation efforts, reinforcing the country’s focus on precision, affordability, and indigenous innovation in next-generation military systems.
