Prime Minister Modi Concludes Landmark Norway Visit with Green Strategic Partnership and Press Freedom Exchange
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Norway marked the first such visit by an Indian leader in 43 years, resulting in a Green Strategic Partnership covering clean energy, blue economy, Arctic cooperation, innovation, and expanded India-Nordic collaboration. The visit also saw a press freedom exchange and diplomatic briefing discussions.
The visit underscored expanding India-Norway relations through structured cooperation in emerging and strategic sectors. The newly established Green Strategic Partnership aims to deepen collaboration in clean energy transition, sustainable ocean-based economic activities, Arctic research engagement, and innovation-driven development frameworks.
A broader diplomatic engagement also unfolded at the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, where leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Sweden joined discussions alongside Norway and India. The summit reinforced regional cooperation mechanisms and emphasized joint work in technology-led growth areas, including 6G development, STEM research initiatives, and circular economy models.
Bilateral economic ties featured prominently in the discussions, with trade between India and Norway reported at 19 billion United States dollars. Both sides explored expanded cooperation in advanced telecommunications, scientific research ecosystems, and sustainable industrial practices aligned with global climate and innovation priorities.
The visit also witnessed a public controversy during the joint statement phase with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Journalist Helle Lyng urged Prime Minister Modi to take questions, referencing Norway’s top global press freedom ranking in contrast to India’s 157th position. The exchange drew attention to differing perspectives on media access and press engagement practices during high-level diplomatic visits.
Following the incident, the Indian Embassy conducted a formal briefing where official Sibi George defended India’s position on press freedom and addressed multiple pointed questions from reporters, reiterating the country’s perspective amid the raised concerns.
The visit concluded with both nations reaffirming their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation, even as the exchange highlighted ongoing differences in international perceptions of press freedom and media engagement standards.
