Mamata Banerjee Appears in Lawyer’s Robe at Calcutta High Court Amid Post-Election Violence Case
Mamata Banerjee appeared in a lawyer’s robe at the Calcutta High Court to argue a public interest litigation on post-poll violence after the May 2026 elections. She alleged attacks on TMC workers, arson, demolitions, and police inaction amid political unrest following the BJP’s electoral victory.
During her submission, Banerjee detailed a series of alleged violent incidents, including bulldozer demolitions at Kolkata’s New Market area, arson attacks on Trinamool Congress offices, assaults on women and children, and threats directed toward her family. She further alleged administrative and police inaction in responding to these events.
The political backdrop to the case remains tense after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 207 of the 294 seats, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year hold on power. The post-election period has been marked by widespread clashes, resulting in four reported deaths and more than 400 arrests, with both parties exchanging accusations of orchestrating violence.
The High Court heard the matter and subsequently adjourned the case without issuing any orders. The appearance of Mamata Banerjee in legal attire inside the courtroom has drawn sharp political reactions, with Trinamool Congress leaders praising her stance and courage, while opposition figures from the Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the proceedings as performative theatrics.
The development underscores the deepening political and social unrest in the state following a closely contested election, with legal scrutiny now intersecting directly with high-stakes political confrontation.
