Raxaul Airport Expansion Cleared: Major Boost for Connectivity Near India–Nepal Border
Raxaul Airport near the India–Nepal border is set for major expansion as Bihar government issues tender for modernization. The project includes runway extension, land acquisition, and infrastructure upgrades to boost connectivity, trade, tourism, and regional growth.
Taking to the social media platform X, Samrat Choudhary stated that a tender has been floated for engineering consultancy services covering the construction of runway, apron, taxiway, and other critical airside infrastructure. He emphasized that this initiative aims to integrate the region more effectively with broader aviation networks. The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the project.
According to the Chief Minister, the redevelopment of Raxaul Airport will significantly improve air travel accessibility in the Champaran region. He noted that the project is expected to stimulate trade, boost tourism, and energize the local economy. He further highlighted that under the commitment of the dual-engine government, Bihar is poised to achieve new milestones in development.
Raxaul Airport was originally constructed in 1962 but is currently non-operational. The government now plans to upgrade the facility to accommodate large aircraft such as the Airbus A320. The proposed upgrade includes the acquisition of 139 acres of additional land and the extension of the runway to approximately 2,360 meters.
For land acquisition, the Bihar government has already released ₹207.70 crore. The Airports Authority of India is overseeing the upgrade process. In addition to its civil aviation benefits, the airport will also hold strategic importance for the Indian Air Force.
The revival and expansion of Raxaul Airport marks a critical infrastructure push in a sensitive border region, promising enhanced connectivity, economic growth, and strategic advantage, positioning Champaran as a key emerging hub in eastern India.
