Seven AAP Rajya Sabha Members Merge with BJP Under Raghav Chadha’s Leadership
Seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, led by Raghav Chadha, merge with BJP using anti-defection provisions. The move boosts BJP’s strength in the Upper House and triggers strong backlash from AAP, which calls it a betrayal amid allegations of enforcement action and rising youth discontent.
Among those who joined the merger are prominent figures including Sandeep Pathak and Swati Maliwal. The group invoked provisions under the anti-defection law to avoid disqualification, ensuring the legality of their transition from AAP to BJP.
Raghav Chadha publicly justified the move by stating that the Aam Aadmi Party had deviated from its foundational anti-corruption principles. Following the merger, Chadha was welcomed at the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters, where party leaders greeted him with garlands and sweets, signaling a celebratory endorsement of the political shift.
The development has strengthened the Bharatiya Janata Party’s position in the Rajya Sabha, bringing its tally close to 150 seats. Notably, this also marks the party’s first representation from Delhi in the Upper House in several decades, underscoring the broader political implications of the merger.
The Aam Aadmi Party has strongly criticized the move, labeling it as a betrayal. The party has also linked the defection to alleged enforcement agency actions, including claims of an Enforcement Directorate raid, while reports indicate growing dissatisfaction among younger supporters.
This high-profile political realignment not only reshapes the balance of power in the Rajya Sabha but also signals a critical moment in Delhi’s political landscape, with potential long-term consequences for both parties.
