Iran Claims Second U.S. F-35 Downed as Wreckage Analysis Points to F-15

Iran’s IRGC claims it shot down a second U.S. F-35 from RAF Lakenheath, releasing wreckage images. However, experts and OSINT analysts identify the debris as an F-15E Strike Eagle tail fin. The Pentagon remains silent amid ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions and conflicting narratives.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced early Friday that its air defenses destroyed a second U.S. F-35 from the RAF Lakenheath squadron, releasing images of wreckage bearing labels typical of stealth aircraft, triggering immediate scrutiny from defense experts and open-source intelligence analysts.

According to the IRGC statement, the incident marks the second alleged downing of a U.S. F-35 linked to the same base. The announcement was accompanied by visual evidence intended to substantiate the claim, with markings and labels presented as consistent with stealth aircraft components.

However, experts and OSINT analysts quickly identified the debris as matching an F-15E Strike Eagle tail fin from the same base’s 494th Fighter Squadron, contradicting the IRGC’s assertion. Analysts noted that the structural features and material composition in the released images align with the F-15E platform rather than the F-35’s distinct composites.
