Israel-Supplied NEGEV LMGs Reach India Under ‘Make in India’ Initiative, Marking Major Defence Milestone
Israel supplies 2,000 NEGEV 7.62x51 LMGs to India under the ‘Make in India’ initiative via PLR Systems, marking a major boost to indigenous defence production. The deal includes a 41,000-weapon order, technology transfer, and expanded India-Israel defence cooperation.
The delivery includes 2,000 units of the NEGEV 7.62x51 LMGs, part of a larger order of 41,000 weapons. The transfer was executed through PLR Systems, a joint venture between Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) and the Adani Group. An additional 4,000 units are expected to be delivered later this year, reinforcing the scale and continuity of the supply arrangement.
The milestone follows the successful transfer of technology, enabling domestic manufacturing and reinforcing India’s push to strengthen its defence production ecosystem. The initiative reflects administrative and industrial coordination aimed at reducing reliance on imports while enhancing local capabilities.
The NEGEV 7.62x51 is among the lightest in its class and is currently used by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). It is designed for high precision, reliability in harsh conditions, and effective target engagement. The weapon supports both semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes and can be deployed across land, air, and naval platforms, indicating its operational versatility.
Equipped with Picatinny rails and tritium night sights, the LMG enhances operational capability in low-light environments. Its compatibility with NATO standards further ensures durability and interoperability, aligning with global military specifications.
In addition to the LMG contract, PLR Systems has also secu
red an order to supply 1.7 lakh close-quarter battle carbines, with initial deliveries expected this year. The development comes amid growing India-Israel defence ties, with both countries recently signing agreements to boost industrial collaboration, technology sharing, and co-production in the defence sector.
The delivery marks a decisive advancement in India’s defence preparedness and manufacturing ambitions, reinforcing the strategic significance of international partnerships in achieving long-term security and industrial self-reliance.
