Festive Play Turns to Horror as Nagpur Grandmother Scalds 4-Year-Old with Boiling Water
A 4-year-old boy in Nagpur sustained 45% burns after his grandmother, Sindhu Thackeray, allegedly threw boiling water on him for spraying her with Holi colors. The shocking incident, caught on CCTV in the Koradi area, has led to a police investigation and sparked national outrage over child safety during festivals.
The victim, identified as four-year-old Om Harish Wange, was playing outside his residence with a spray bottle filled with colored paint. In a moment of festive enthusiasm, the child accidentally sprayed the paint on his grandmother, Sindhu Thackeray. Thackeray was reportedly at a nearby communal bonfire site, known as "Holi wood," where she was filling a bucket with water that had been heated for the occasion. According to local police, the grandmother was instantly enraged by the spray of color and reacted by flinging the entire bucket of boiling water onto the child.
Visuals from the CCTV footage depict a harrowing sequence: the woman, clad in a black saree, is seen carrying the steaming bucket when the child approaches her. Immediately after the water is thrown, the boy can be seen shrieking in pain and jumping away in agony. The footage further shows a bystander—another woman—quickly intervening by pouring cold water on the child to soothe the burns. Ironically, Thackeray is also seen joining in moments later to douse the boy with cold water as the gravity of the situation became apparent.
Medical professionals at a private hospital in Nagpur, where Om was rushed for emergency treatment, have assessed that the child suffered severe burns covering approximately 45% of his body, primarily below the waist. While the boy remains under intensive medical care, his condition is being closely monitored by specialists.
The Koradi police have formally initiated the process to register a criminal offense against Sindhu Thackeray. While some local officials suggest the act may have been a result of "sudden provocation" rather than premeditation, the legal stance remains firm regarding the reckless endangerment of a minor. This tragic episode serves as a somber reminder of how unregulated anger can transform a cultural celebration into a lifelong tragedy, highlighting the critical need for child safety and emotional restraint even during the most spirited of holidays.
