Habitat vandalism case: All accused granted bail, BMC demolishes illegal structures in premises

All 12 accused in the vandalism incident at The Habitat Studio, including Shinde faction leader Rahul Kanal, have been granted bail by a Bandra court. They were arrested by Khar police after a group allegedly ransacked the club over comedian Kunal Kamra's show, claiming he had used derogatory language against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The accused were booked under non-bailable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita — Section 132 (rioting) and Section 333 (causing damage to public property) — along with other charges. However, the court granted them bail on a personal bond of ₹15,000 each. Kanal's counsel had argued in court that the applied sections were unlawful, while the police said the group had entered the venue and caused damage citing remarks made during Kamra’s performance.

According to police, Kamra had recorded his show at The Habitat on January 21, and the alleged vandalism occurred a day before the FIR was lodged at MIDC police station.

BMC carries out demolition at The Habitat Club premises

In a parallel development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday took demolition action at two locations within The Habitat premises. The first demolition was carried out in the basement, where a studio is located — the same space where Kunal Kamra had performed his show. According to BMC officials, any form of construction in the basement is prohibited, and the structure had been sealed by police after the vandalism incident. During their inspection, BMC officials found an unauthorised construction measuring 21.7 metres in length, 7.5 metres in width, and 2.8 metres in height, which was subsequently demolished.

The second action was on the terrace, where a temporary shed had been erected without permission. The civic body said that today's demolition was part of action against unauthorised temporary structures. Officials added that an investigation into the building's layout plan is underway to check for any violations. If such violations are found, appropriate notices will be issued and further action taken.
