IMD Forecast: Heavy Rain, Severe Thunderstorms to Hit Several Parts of India

IMD has forecast widespread rain, thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rainfall across India from September 8 to 14, with West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and southern states facing intense weather.

 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather forecast warning of widespread rainfall, severe thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy precipitation across several regions from September 8 to 14.

According to the IMD, East, Central and Peninsular India are expected to receive significant rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, while isolated heavy showers are likely over parts of Northwest and West India. Hot and humid conditions will also briefly persist over Kerala and coastal areas.

In Central India, West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience fairly widespread rain with thunderstorms from September 10 to 14. Heavy rainfall is likely over East and West Madhya Pradesh on September 12 and 13, while Chhattisgarh may receive heavy rain from September 10 to 14.

Vidarbha is likely to experience isolated rainfall from September 8 to 14, with heavy rain expected on September 12.

In East India, West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to receive widespread rainfall from September 8 to 14. Heavy rain is likely across most states in the region, while Odisha may receive very heavy rainfall on September 10. Severe lightning is also expected over Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on September 8.

In West India, Konkan, Goa and Madhya Maharashtra are likely to receive fairly widespread rainfall from September 8 to 14, with isolated heavy rain expected on September 12 and 13. Gujarat and Marathwada may experience isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms during the same period, while Gujarat is likely to receive heavy rain on September 12 and 13.

Over South Peninsular India, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep and Telangana are expected to receive fairly widespread rainfall from September 10 to 14. Heavy rain is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana from September 10 to 14.

The IMD has also forecast gusty winds of up to 60 kmph over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu from September 8 to 12.

A low-pressure area, likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, along with an active monsoon trough, is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of West Bengal, the IMD said.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely in Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, Bankura, Purba and Paschim Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts till Thursday.

The sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar are also expected to receive downpour over the next five days due to an active monsoon and favourable wind pattern, the Met office said.

The September 9 weather forecast comes amid the IMD's wider September 8-14 outlook, with several regions facing sustained rainfall, thunderstorms, heavy precipitation and strong winds.
