Gautam Gambhir Safe as BCCI Reviews His Performance Ahead of World Cup 2027

During Gambhir’s tenure as head coach, India have won the ICC Champions Trophy, Asia Cup and ICC T20 World Cup titles. However, his coaching record has also faced concerns. India lost the Test series in Australia, were clean-swept by New Zealand in a home Test series and later lost a Test series at home to South Africa. More recently, India’s performances on the T20 tours of Ireland and England were also disappointing.

India, who qualified for the first two ICC World Test Championship (WTC) finals, failed to reach the previous final and now face a difficult path to qualify for the upcoming ICC WTC final. Despite these concerns, according to news house RevSportz, there is currently no threat to Gambhir’s position.

The report states that the BCCI has closely reviewed Gambhir’s performance and believes that his overall record as head coach remains very strong. The review reportedly focused on two key aspects, which have ensured that his position is not under threat. The board has also expressed satisfaction with his performance in the Test format.

According to sources, the BCCI has acknowledged that the team has been going through a transition in red-ball cricket since Gambhir became head coach. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin have recently retired from Test cricket, leaving the team increasingly dependent on younger players under the leadership of Shubman Gill. The continued injuries to players have also been considered a factor.

The impact of injuries has been a particular concern in the Test format. It is believed that the result of the series against South Africa could have been different if Shubman Gill had not been injured during the series.

India have now reached Sri Lanka for a two-Test series, but key players including fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, number three batter Sai Sudharsan and all-rounder Washington Sundar are not part of the squad.

As far as the white-ball formats are concerned, Gambhir’s record as head coach has strengthened his position. Based on his performance in those formats, he is expected to remain with the Indian team comfortably through the 2027 World Cup.
