VinFast TCO Calculator Reveals Potential EV Savings Against Gasoline Cars in India

VinFast’s new TCO Calculator lets Indian buyers compare EV and gasoline vehicle costs over time. A VF 6 Earth example shows potential savings of INR 681,716 over five years.

VinFast’s new Total Cost of Ownership Calculator is giving buyers a clearer way to compare the long-term costs of electric vehicles and gasoline cars, turning potential EV savings into personalized figures that can support purchasing and financial decisions.

For car buyers, comparing horsepower, cargo space and safety ratings can take only minutes. Determining which vehicle will actually cost less over years of loan payments, fuel bills and maintenance is more difficult. These expenses form a vehicle’s total cost of ownership, or TCO, which covers the costs incurred throughout the ownership period.

The information gap has become increasingly relevant as electric vehicles enter the mainstream. Although EVs are widely promoted for their lower operating costs, consumers can still find it difficult to translate those potential savings into their own finances. The amount an EV can save over five years depends on factors including annual driving distance, ownership duration and financing choices.

VinFast has introduced a Total Cost of Ownership Calculator initially across its Asian markets, allowing consumers to compare the long-term economics of electric vehicles with gasoline cars and rival EVs based on their own driving habits. Instead of focusing only on sticker prices, the web-based tool shows the cumulative financial impact of ownership, including financing and running costs, over several years.

Users enter basic information such as the vehicle model, monthly mileage, battery ownership option and expected ownership period. The calculator then estimates monthly payments, monthly energy costs and total ownership costs before showing potential savings over the selected period compared with comparable internal combustion vehicles and other EVs.

In India, a buyer selecting a VF 6 Earth, driving 2,000 km per month over five years, would see an estimated total ownership cost of INR 1,782,655. Under the same assumptions, the calculator estimates that a comparable gasoline vehicle would cost INR 2,464,371 over the same period. The difference represents potential savings of INR 681,716, or about 28%.

The tool also serves as a financial planning resource for households, commuters and commercial users seeking to forecast transportation expenses before purchasing a vehicle. This is particularly relevant in emerging EV markets, where higher upfront purchase prices can create adoption challenges even when electric vehicles offer potential long-term financial benefits. Reduced energy consumption can, over time, offset much or even all of the initial price premium.

Research indicates that making such savings more transparent can influence purchasing decisions. One survey found that simply showing consumers five-year fuel savings had little effect on vehicle preferences, while providing total cost of ownership information increased the likelihood that buyers of small and mid-sized cars would choose hybrid and battery electric vehicles over gasoline models.

Deloitte’s 2026 Global Automotive Consumer Study found that 52% of U.S. consumers considering an EV cited lower fuel costs as their primary motivation, while 40% said overall vehicle cost remains one of their biggest concerns. The findings indicate that buyers are increasingly assessing vehicles based on lifetime ownership economics rather than purchase price alone.

For automakers, communicating lifetime ownership economics may therefore become as important as highlighting battery range or performance.

For VinFast, the calculator reflects that shift by allowing consumers to test different ownership scenarios themselves rather than relying solely on claims of lower ownership costs. The tool turns a key argument for electric mobility into a measurable and personalized calculation that buyers can use when evaluating their vehicle and financial choices.
