Tree Fall Forces Temporary Closure of Malabar Hill Nature Trail in South Mumbai

A tree fell on the Nature Trail walkway at Malabar Hill in South Mumbai, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to temporarily close the attraction for safety inspections and repair work. No injuries were reported. The trail, inspired by Singapore's Treetop Walk, remains shut until authorities complete restoration and safety assessments.

A tree collapsed onto the popular Nature Trail walkway at Malabar Hill in South Mumbai on Friday, prompting civic authorities to temporarily shut the attraction as a precautionary measure. Officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

According to BMC officials, teams from the Garden Department and the Hydraulic Engineer's Department were immediately dispatched to the site after information about the tree fall was received. The teams began operations to remove the fallen tree and clear the affected section of the trail.

The incident has triggered urgent safety inspections and repair work by civic authorities. Officials stated that the walkway has been closed in the interest of public safety and will remain inaccessible to visitors until immediate repair work is completed and detailed safety assessments are carried out. Authorities have also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the temporary closure.

The Nature Trail at Malabar Hill is a key component of the BMC's initiative to reconnect residents with Mumbai's natural environment. The project has been designed to showcase the city's green cover, coastal biodiversity, and lesser-known ecological spaces, providing visitors with a tranquil retreat from the densely built urban landscape of South Mumbai.

Inspired by Singapore's Treetop Walk, the Nature Trail features a 485-metre elevated walking bridge that offers visitors a unique experience amid nature. The structure spans more than 2.4 metres in width and has been constructed using durable Merbau wood.

The temporary closure underscores the importance of continuous safety monitoring and maintenance of public recreational infrastructure, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas that attract large numbers of visitors seeking access to Mumbai's natural heritage.
