UDF Sweeps Kerala Assembly, Ends Left Democratic Front’s Decade-Long Rule
The United Democratic Front has won a sweeping majority in the Kerala Assembly elections with 102 seats, ending a decade of Left Democratic Front rule. The Bharatiya Janata Party achieved a breakthrough with three seats, while V. D. Satheesan emerges as a key contender for Chief Minister amid shifting political dynamics in the state.
The Left Democratic Front suffered a significant setback, winning only 35 seats despite securing 36.64 percent of the vote share, reflecting a steep decline in its legislative dominance. The Bharatiya Janata Party registered a historic breakthrough in the state by winning its first three assembly seats from Nemom, Kazhakoottam, and Chathannoor, and increased its statewide vote share to 14.2 percent.
The election outcome has generated widespread attention across social media platforms, where supporters of the United Democratic Front have praised the perceived secular balance of its elected representatives. At the same time, critics have raised questions regarding Hindu representation within the alliance’s legislative composition, intensifying post-poll political debate.
With the mandate firmly in its favor, political attention has now shifted toward senior Congress leader V. D. Satheesan, who is widely being viewed as the leading contender for the position of Chief Minister. Discussions within the coalition are expected to intensify as the United Democratic Front moves toward forming the new government in Kerala.
The election result signals a major realignment in Kerala’s political landscape, ending a decade of Left Democratic Front governance and opening a new phase of coalition-led administration under the United Democratic Front.
