Indian Tech Professional’s Viral UK Video Ignites Debate on Work-Life Balance and Migration Trends

A viral video by Indian tech professional Kartik Modi working in the UK has reignited debate on work-life balance, migration trends, and workplace culture differences between India and Europe, highlighting why many Indians seek better opportunities and mental well-being abroad.

The aspiration to work abroad continues to drive millions of young Indians, with Western nations and Europe emerging as preferred destinations. India remains the world’s largest source of migrants, with more than 17 million citizens residing overseas. Each year, lakhs of Indians attempt to move abroad for education and employment, often influenced by narratives of better career opportunities and improved quality of life.

Amid this ongoing trend, a video shared by Indian tech professional Kartik Modi, currently working in the United Kingdom, has sparked widespread discussion on social media. The video highlights his personal experience and sheds light on the reasons behind his decision to leave India for work abroad, particularly focusing on the issue of work-life balance.

In the video posted on Instagram, Modi is seen at a beach shortly after finishing his workday. He mentions that it is 5 p.m., and he has come to spend some time by the seaside after office hours. He adds that he plans to relax for a few minutes before heading out for coffee. The video also features one of his colleagues, who shares his own perspective on workplace culture in India and the United Kingdom.

The colleague describes a stark contrast between the two environments, stating that in India, work often continues relentlessly, whereas in the United Kingdom, employees experience what he termed as a genuine sense of work-life balance. He described the experience as “amazing” and comparable to “a cinematic experience,” a remark that further amplified the video’s reach and impact.

Although the video did not receive a large number of comments, the responses it did garner highlighted a significant underlying issue. Several users noted that migration is not driven solely by financial incentives but also by the pursuit of a better lifestyle and mental well-being. Others emphasized the need for reforms in India’s work culture. One user pointed out that spending time at a beach after work is far preferable to being stuck in urban traffic congestion.

The discussion ties into broader global assessments, where India is often ranked between 45 and 55 in terms of work-life balance. Contributing factors include long working hours, frequent overtime, weekend work commitments, and hesitation among employees to take leave. In contrast, European nations such as Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway consistently rank at the top, owing to structured work hours and a stronger emphasis on personal life.
