High-Speed Tempo Triggers Hit-and-Run in Powai, Three Workers Injured; Separate Thane Crash Claims Woman’s Life
A speeding tempo injured three workers in a hit-and-run incident in Powai, Mumbai, while a separate crash in Thane killed a woman. Police have launched investigations in both cases, highlighting rising concerns over reckless driving and road safety enforcement.
The incident occurred in Morarji Nagar, where a contractor appointed by the municipal corporation had deployed a team of labourers for sewer cleaning work. According to initial reports, the workers were engaged in their duties along the roadside when the fast-moving tempo veered into them, causing severe injuries. The driver immediately escaped from the spot, abandoning the victims.
Police officials confirmed that the Powai Police Station has registered a case against an unidentified driver. A search operation has been launched to trace and apprehend the accused. In connection with the case, the contractor has been taken into custody for questioning, while an investigation is underway to determine whether there was any negligence in adhering to safety protocols at the work site.
In a separate incident on Friday, May 1, a fatal hit-and-run accident occurred near Majiwada Junction in Thane, claiming the life of a woman employed at a nearby residential complex. The deceased was attempting to cross the busy Mumbai-Nashik Highway while returning to her home in Mumbra.
According to police, the woman had successfully reached the opposite side of the highway to board a public vehicle but misjudged the speed of oncoming traffic. She was struck by a tempo, whose driver also fled the scene. The victim was rushed to Kalwa Government Hospital, where she was declared deceased upon arrival.
These back-to-back incidents underscore the growing menace of reckless driving and the alarming frequency of hit-and-run cases in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, raising serious concerns about road safety enforcement and accountability.
