Panipat Textile MSMEs Achieve Landmark Carbon Reductions and Fiscal Savings in FMC-Led Decarbonisation Drive
The Foundation for MSME Clusters (FMC), supported by HSBC and CRB, concludes a landmark decarbonisation project in Panipat's textile hub. The initiative projected 5655.60 tonnes of CO2 reduction, unlocked 6.47 crore in annual savings, and secured INR 39.94 crore in green finance proposals, proving that sustainable low-carbon operations drive global competitiveness and profitability for Indian MSMEs.
Conceived during a period when textile MSMEs faced mounting pressure from global sustainability standards alongside restricted access to finance, technology, and technical expertise, the project bridged this gap by demonstrating scalable, business-friendly pathways. Anchored in Panipat—India’s premier recycled textile hub—the initiative focused on bolstering environmental performance and global competitiveness, asserting that climate action does not necessitate a compromise on growth. An integral component of this progress included Business Development Service Provider interactive sessions on ERP software for efficient planning and resource management, directly facilitating the decarbonization process.
The initiative was distinguished by FMC’s ecosystem-driven, implementation-first methodology. Moving beyond mere awareness, the project engaged 40 MSMEs, including 16 pioneering enterprises that received intensive support through diagnostic assessments, customized decarbonisation plans, technology linkages, and the facilitation of green finance. A series of targeted BDSP promotion events further reinforced the ecosystem by uniting MSMEs, financial institutions, and technical experts. These efforts resulted in 215 enterprises being sensitised and the creation of robust linkages with service providers, translating into tangible action regarding energy audits, solar adoption, digitalisation, and cleaner production processes essential for cost efficiency and international compliance.
For entrepreneurs on the ground, the shift was both perceptual and practical. Mr. Ankur, an entrepreneur from Panipat, noted that while sustainability once felt like an added burden, the project revealed it improves efficiency and reduces costs, providing the confidence necessary to meet international buyer expectations. Reflecting on the broader significance, FMC representative Mr. Manoj Bhatt emphasized that decarbonisation is a matter of competitiveness rather than just compliance. By merging technical support, financial access, and ecosystem partnerships, the project created a model capable of being scaled across India’s industrial clusters.
As the initiative concludes, it leaves a definitive roadmap for sustainable transformation. The key learnings are unequivocal: awareness must be paired with continuous handholding, adoption accelerates when the business case is clear, and local service providers are essential for long-term impact. The Panipat experience stands as a compelling blueprint for how India’s MSMEs can transition toward a low-carbon future while strengthening economic resilience. Established in 2005, the Foundation for MSME Clusters (FMC) continues its work as a leading Nodal Agency, having impacted over 100,000 units and facilitated the reduction of 60,000 tons of carbon to date.
