Indian-American Co-Founder’s Autonomous Drone Boat Plays Key Role in Historic US Navy Rescue Mission

An autonomous drone boat developed by Texas-based Saronic Technologies, co-founded by Indian-American Vibhav Altekar, played a vital role in a historic US Navy rescue mission near the Strait of Hormuz. The AI-powered Corsair vessel recovered the pilot and co-pilot of a downed Apache helicopter, marking a major milestone in autonomous military operations.

A cutting-edge autonomous drone boat developed by a Texas-based company co-founded by Indian-American entrepreneur Vibhav Altekar played a crucial role in a landmark US Navy rescue operation after an Apache helicopter was shot down by Iranian forces near the Strait of Hormuz.

The mission marked a historic first for the United States military, which deployed an autonomous surface vessel remotely piloted by a human operator to recover personnel at sea. The drone boat was used to rescue both the pilot and co-pilot of the downed Apache helicopter, demonstrating the growing role of artificial intelligence-powered unmanned systems in modern military operations.

The vessel, known as the Corsair, was developed by Saronic Technologies and has been in operational use by the US Armed Forces for some time. Measuring 24 feet in length, the diesel-powered autonomous boat can travel at speeds of up to 35 knots and has an operational range exceeding 1,000 nautical miles. Equipped with artificial intelligence capabilities, the Corsair can carry payloads weighing up to 1,000 pounds.

The drone boat is deployed under the US Navy’s Task Force 59, a specialized unit responsible for overseeing uncrewed vessels and artificial intelligence-enabled drone systems. The initiative forms part of the Pentagon’s broader strategy to expand the use of autonomous and unmanned platforms alongside conventional military assets.
